Remixing–Featherproof Style

Featherproof held a contest in honor of their new publishing effort, letting people remix one of their newest offerings, stories from Blake Butler’s Scorch Atlas. The author even judged the contest himself, and Featherproof’s website has a pdf compilation of the entries. That product is the free ebook Scrotal Cash. Our editorial staff passed around Scorch Atlas a few weeks ago. The design is striking, burnt and distorted as if it were a relic in a post-apocalyptic world. The pdf compilation stays a little too committed to the distorted aesthetic for a 2D ebook to pull off, but otherwise it’s cool for a download. Not having read the original work, I have no idea how each piece relates to the source (though Featherproof explains the process here), but some–like the winning entry’s first pages–are fun to read in their own right.

We’re all very excited about the early pieces we’ve accepted for the next issue of New CollAge. The first acceptance letters are going out very soon, and we look forward to many more submissions in the coming weeks. So far the staff decided on poems for publication, although we look out for engaging fiction, nonfiction, and artwork, as well. For editorial guidelines, browse our “Submit” section.

With progress picking up, look for a more posts and updates.

Yes, we went there. We crawled into the Big Top on all fours. We ate kettle corn until we couldn’t stand up. We spent the night.

Welcome to the revived, revisioned, reconstructed New CollAge. We’ll be adding and subtracting from this site pretty regularly, especially as we’re building features, so stop by for a meander now and then.

Check out our current issue, with some great poems, artwork, and a fascinating interview with New CollAge founder, Mac Miller.

A sneak peak at pullout artwork from the current issue is here.

Our first online exclusive: (Editor)ial: An Interview with Sarah Smith from Bat City Review.
